ADVANCED ASTRONOMY

Physics, Presentation and Researching Skills, Space Science

Intended primarily as a follow-on to the Aliens & Asteroids course, Advanced Astronomy provides an opportunity to venture into deep space.

Having revised the basics of the Celestial Sphere and the construction of our own Solar System, students will explore a variety of deep-sky phenomena and take part in a group discussion on the origins of the Universe.

Professional observatories employ CCD cameras to capture images because they are far more sensitive to light than the naked eye.  We will have access to our own CCD camera and as individual projects, student  will record distant galaxies, nebulas and clusters of stars.

During the course, we are joined by our own special visitor from Outer Space - a large piece of the famous Campo del Cielo meteorite that fell to Earth around 4500 years ago!

Each participant will be invited to present a report on their project to their peers, as a prelude to a full presentation at the end of the course which takes parents on a guided tour of the Universe.
